Best Display of Sportsmanship: Miracle League of Frisco
Springtime in Frisco – while it was once heralded by fields of blooming wildflowers, these days a surer sign of spring’s arrival is field upon field of kids playing youth sports. While examples of good sportsmanship can be found in every local league, we’re awarding Best Display of Sportsmanship to a league whose players, coaches and fans are defined by the respect they display to teammates and competitors alike. The Miracle League of Frisco offers children with physical and/or mental challenges the opportunity to play league sports such as baseball, soccer and bowling. Susan Bland, president of The Miracle League of Frisco, knows first-hand the impact this league can have on a special needs child–her two sons, ages six and 14, are both League athletes. “Playing sports gives them a sense of pride in working as a team and being able to support each other,” says Mrs. Bland. Sportsmanship is also uniquely displayed in the Miracle League’s volunteer program, as designated volunteer “buddies” assist League athletes on the field. “Buddies help show these kids the importance of achieving their personal best.” The impact of being part of the League on both the kids and their buddies, says Mrs. Bland, is immeasurable. “For most kids, sports are taken for granted as an extracurricular activity. For special needs children, it is such a huge opportunity to learn and grow.” If you’d like to learn more about participating in The Miracle League of Frisco, visit their website at FriscoMiracleLeague.org.
